Last week, I was lucky enough to spend the week organising the Manchester Young Rewired State (YRS) centre. If you haven't heard, YRS is a weeklong "hack event" whereby young coders and developers aged 18 and under gather to build applications from open data. Last year, our Manchester centre was one of four participating YRS teams across the country. This year, we were one of 14!
Back in April, DonorsChoose.org gave developers and data crunchers an opportunity to “hack education.” The contest challenged the public to build apps that improve education in the United States. Contestants developed apps and data analyses across seven categories, which were evaluated against a central question: Which app or analysis has the greatest potential to engage the public and impact education?
We want to build an online portal that will bring people together through collective imagination about what they wish, in their highest dreams, to be a picture of future cities, future governmental systems, technology, educational systems, economic systems, future visual spaces, architecture, environmental solutions, anything possible. It is in the belief that by undue focus on negative scenarios and individualistic commercialism, we are inevitably and unwittingly likely to hamper positive future development as a collective.
Are you a data analyst or a developer interested in improving public education in the United States? Submit your ideas and you can get to work with the DonorsChoose.org Hacking Education Competition!
To get a chance to work with DonorsChoose.org you would have to be chosen from the top finishers in each of the seven categories: Data Analysis, Javascript, .Net, PHP, Python, Ruby, Wildcard.

Social media -- those avenues to send instant, short, widely-distributed messages and images -- cuts both ways:
And it's been used to organize protests since the 1990s - so can we stop now with how "new" it all is?
After successfully introducing free Wikispaces Plus accounts for K-12 education, Wikispaces has decided to give away 2 million free Plus accounts to higher education institutions!
So far Wikispaces have been helping primary and secondary (K-12) educators, but they have decided to "take it to the next level" and expand the programme towards the higher education. Wikispaces are a very useful space for teachers, students, professors, researchers and librarians who need a simple, powerful way to write and work on the Internet.
As a part of the free wiki programme Wikispaces is also planning to develop and release some of the tools and features that educators request most often.
Follett Corporation has announced a challenge to recognize the most innovative school libraries. You can submit your video story till June 1, 2011.
Through the contest the company wants to draw attention to a strong link between the well-developed library programs and students achievements. Five prizes, including a $35,000 first place prize will be awarded by a panel of judges - library and educational professionals. A sixth $10,000 prize will be awarded based on online voting for the best video.
The jury is looking for schools that “do the most outstanding job of applying technology, content and creativity in ways that engage students, foster literacy and critical thinking”.

I am Katie Laird, co-founder of the Houston Net2 chapter and Communications Director / Social Media strategist for a Web firm called Schipul - The Web Marketing Company.
It's been a couple of years since I've been able to attend a TechSoup conference and I am very excited to see both new and familiar faces. Working for a business that serves both for-profit orgs and NPOs, I have had my hands on many different kinds of marketing projects, fundraising campaigns and technology builds. I hope to learn about new tech / networks and be able to offer advice or guidance to others in any way I can.
