Book review: "Yes We Did - Obama's social media strategy"

Given how obsessed everyone was with how social media helped elect Barack Obama, I’m surprised that I haven’t read more reviews of this book: “Yes We Did – An Inside Look at How Social Media Built the Obama Brand” by Rahaf Harfoush, which gives an excellent overview over how the Obama campaign used social media to mobilize people to donate time and  money.

September Net2 Think Tank: Most Important Survey Questions

When starting new partnerships or new programs, it's common to do an inventory of the personnel, skills, knowledge, capacity, budget and other factors that can influence the ease of getting started and the obstacles to success.  A similar inventory, or health check, is often done when groups want to get started with social media.  This health check looks to see what kind of experience people already have with the tools, what the organization or group's current position is towards using new technologies, and so on.  Many consultants or third parties conduct health checks like this before diving into a project with an organization so they know how much to prepare and where to start.  These surveys are the topic of this month's Net2 Think Tank topic!

net2 think tankThe July Net2 Think Tank hopes to provide an opportunity to look at some of the changes in our organizations, our messages, and even our strategies because of the impact of social media.  We know that the Internet in general, and social technologies especially, have greatly impacted the way social benefit organizations do their work.  You can participate in the Net2 Think Tank by blogging your answer to the topic below - all submissions will be republished at the end of the month.

Cover of Our Social Media Marketing eBook

I was given a review copy of "Getting to First Base" a social media marketing how to book by Darren Barefoot and Julia Szabo.    The books provides great advice on the following topics:

  • Bring more visitors to your website
    Increase your company’s visibility online
    Engage with online influencers

Social Media and Nonprofits: The Line Between NGTD and ROI

One barrier to adoption of social media tools (and other technologies) is a concern from management or your boss about the value or benefits. What's the roi? Are you simply wasting your time? Are you, gasp, "not getting anything done"?

Promoting a podcast?

Cross-posted from my blog.]

On of the hats I wear now for my chief client  is new-media editor of OnEarth Magazine. For the last six months, OnEarth has been putting out a podcast — 28 episodes so far, with everything from free-flowing interviews to radio-worthy feature stories to poetry readings. It’s really good content — the people who’re making the episodes are doing great work, and they deserve a big, healthy pool of listeners.
