Cast your vote for our project in Senegal: "Using Mobile Technologies To Reduce Maternal Death"

In the Kedougou region of Senegal, 15 women have been saved by access to emergency obstetric care since our project started a few weeks ago,

One of the main difficulties for communities in Kedougou is lack of access to proper medical care during an emergency, bad roads and lack of communications systems are a big problem. This has resulted in Kedougou region having  the highest maternal death rate in Senegal, which is twice the national average.

Need to use full potential of mobile networks to improve essential health services

The use of mobile phones has been increasing at an accelerated rate all over Africa. In some regions we have seen the impact on health systems, where health centres are now able to call hospitals for an ambulance when there is an emergency.

While mobile phone coverage may exist it is not always used to its full potential to improve social services. Mobile coverage comes at a cost, and resources are not available to all.  Ways must be found to make networks more accessible so they can be used to promote access to health care across the rural sector where long distances and bad roads make it all the more essential to provide a timely referral system for patients suffering complications.

Women and Blindness Campaign

Did you know that two thirds of people around the world who are blind are women?

To highlight this fact, Sightsavers has launched a Women and Blindness campaign in collaboration with iconic photographer Rankin. Working with six renowned make-up artists he has produced some incredible images, and we've launched a micro-site to showcase them:

It would be great if you could view the site, share the link with your friends, family and colleagues, and become a fan of Sightsavers on Facebook and Twitter!

WITNESS and the HUB

As we have said in previous post the power of the video have no limits. Just think about the images that we saw coming from the Beijing Olympics ceremony, or the images we saw coming from the quick war between Russia and Georgia.  But there are other important issues that go uncovered. There are heart-breaking stories that go unheard. What news networks tend to cover are the political side of the issues, but hardly the human side. The reason being that they think they are not news worthy.
