The campaigns have definitely changed the way that nonprofits can think about social media. I work for a nonprofit doing poverty eradication in Kenya. We had bounced around the idea of sending out simple, wide-reaching emails soliciting small donations, but it was never something that we thought would amount to much.

The Obama campaign changed that for me (I didn't get John McCain's emails). It was always a very simply ask, "Please help us do good things. Donate $5 before midnight." It worked, and it worked like a charm, too.

Nonprofits: Using YouTube to Raise Money

There are already numerous nonprofits that are using YouTube to raise money -- yours could be next. One way is through membership in the YouTube Nonprofit Program. Nonprofits who apply and are accepted have the opportunity to embed a Google Checkout button on their YouTube channel and viewing pages to drive fundraising.

Hello Fellow NetSquaredians,

Looking forward to the conference to start tomorrow morning. Some of my interests include technology, sociology, volunteering and project management. I think I can work all of those into play tomorrow.

Everyone's introductions sound impressive and accomplished so I'm looking forward to meeting folks in person.

The Importance of Web 1.0 within the Web 2.0 Context

While all of us attendees explore the possible applications of Web 2.0 technology I believe it is important that we remember the profound applications of older (Web 1.0) technology that literally is creating a new class of philanthropists, some of whom might even be interested in funding new Web 2.0 social ventures.

New applications of old technology are still extremely valuable in generating massive cultural change. An analogy: Hip Hop DJs still love vinyl because it complements and extends the creative possibilities of the newest digital technologies. Similarly, Web 1.0 enables the new philanthropists to create whole new pools of money -- and social self-expression -- that can fund the next wave of initiatives and their supporting technologies.
