Say It Ain't So, Google!: Ethical Project Management Sites for your non-profit

There comes a time, usually if you’re working remotely or have no office, where you really need a way to share files, documents, messages and pictures online between a lot of people for free.

Easy, I said at my last Amnesty International meeting, we’ll just set up a Google non-profits account - all their project management tools are free. No thanks, they said, we refuse to use Google because of their human rights record.

Meg Busse, Director of the Non-Profit Career Transitions Program for Idealist explains why you need to know what you're talking about, make it catchy, scour the social networks, and at least try to make personal contact with people if you want a job in the non-profit sector. Also, she is awesome.

Getting started here at netsquared.org!

My name is Jonathan Young. I am 35 years old, live in Hamburg, Germany with my family and work currently as the German site executive for a large Internet-based travel company. Time and time again I have had ideas for Internet-based projects, ideas which could get noticed by many people and at the same time aim to reach a goal which would make me proud of my achievement. The idea of creating a social community with a donation funded virtual human chain around the whole world came early February 2007 and I haven't stopped developing the site since. "Give Earth a Hand" will allow me to create a network of people around the world to help support projects aiming at fighting global warming and the general ecological downfall happening on our planet.

Weekend for Non-profits

This seemed to be a great weekend for non-profits!

There was a local Community Center in our town that raised several thousand dollars for kids after-school programs (due to the fact that the state cut funding for them). Along with other festivities, they had a rubber-duckie race in the river where they adopted out about a thousand ducks at $5 a pop... and it was great fun for the kids.

The MDA telethon was this weekend as well... WOW!! I think they raised like over 61 million dollars!! What a great foundation!

There were others as well all over our state. I guess what I'm seeing is, is that when folks see a real need, they get on board... I think that's awesome!

it isn't a lack of technology - it is a lack of resources

i would love to figure out how to use all these new technologies to make our work easier and more effective, bu who pays for implementing all these fabulous tools and technologies? Even with open source software, low capacity and grassroots nonprofit organizations like mine still have to identify a staff person or key volunteer to implement, manage and support the technolgy. How do I identify that person? how do i motivate current staff and volunteers to add one more responsibility, one more task to an already overscheduled, overfull agenda? Where do i find qualified volunteers who are both motivated and committed to such a large task? how do I manage and supervise them?I think that many of these tools are merely tools for technoogy's sake - without any real vison about who will actually use them. The real digital divide is between organizations - those of us who deveote all our energy to our programs just don't have the resources to implement new technologies.
