Tagging for democracy

Only by joining here, have I realised what tagging is all about and I'm sold. What a great way to get out a message.

My interests include the rose revolutions particularly in Ukraine, institutional childcare, modern day slavery, poverty reduction and social business.

So if anyone else here is interested in these topics, I'd be glad to be part of your network

Is del.icio.us the new Slashdot?

On August 17th, my blog suddenly started receiving an amazing number of hits; its intense popularity lasted a couple of hours.

When I looked at the web analytics, I saw that readers were surfing in from the front page of del.icio.us, because an article of mine ("What do small nonprofits need to know about fundraising for technology?") was featured on the del.icio.us hotlist. I was pretty flattered, because the hotlist usually features web pages that have been bookmarked by thousands of del.icio.us users, while my article has only been bookmarked 64 times as of this writing.

All of this extra traffic inspired me to think about the Slashdot Effect, which is a crash or malfunction that occurs when a link is featured on Slashdot web site and becomes so popular that reader demand far exceeds the web server's capacity. Thanks to my blog host, Tucows, I had no such difficulties. But now I'm wondering whether in the future we'll be speaking of web sites that are "delicioused," just as we now refer to web sites that are "slashdotted."

SXSW: In the Thick of It

Today this post comes to you courtesy of the email center in the middle of the tradeshow floor here at SXSW. It's Day 3-- and the weather is cooling just a bit before our last day tomorrow. Though "cool" is definitely a relative term, considering I read something about yesterday about SNOW in the Bay Area...

Last night I had the pleasure of meeting another member of the Net2 Community-- web consultant, Alexandra (many of you know her as "Alex") Samuel. We all gathered, in web 2.0 appropriateness, at the Yahoo!, Delicious, Flickr party at the Iron Cactus, an Austin staple on 6th St. Billy, Marshall, Alex and I enjoyed the open vibe and the open air of the 2nd floor patio.

When I opened up my custom Google home page this morning I noticed that one of the most popular del.icio.us links for today was a guide to creating a block hover effect for a list of links. This sounded cool -- basically, a neater-looking alternative to links that simply change colour when you mouse over them -- so I checked it out.

And what does this popular page turn out to be? A tribute to the brilliant work that NetSquared's designer, Veerle Pieters, has done in redesigning her own blog. So brilliant, in fact, that somebody went to the trouble of documenting exactly how she accomplished her link rollover effect.

I just learned about this website today. Content is divided up daily. I really like how you can add comments to bookmarks.
