Darfur: Peace at any cost?

Last week, the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution to extend its peacekeeping mission in Darfur. The resolution passed overwhelmingly, with all countries in the council voting for it, except for the United States. A U.S. representative did not cast a vote, citing concerns about the wording of the resolution.

"The U.S. abstained in the vote because language added to the resolution would send the wrong message to Sudanese President Bashir and undermine efforts to bring him and others to justice," Alejandro Wolff said. "This council cannot ignore the terrible crimes that have occurred throughout the conflict in Darfur."

The future of the media today truly is online. The amount of people switching to the internet for their daily habits such as reading the news, watching the news, shopping, research... everything can be found online, and can be used to our advantage. It shouldn't be any different for humanitarian-based initiatives. Non-profit organizations can use the internet and the power of voice and visual aid to their advantage online. That's where a website like www.goodtube.org can come in handy. It is completely non-profit, completely free to use, and is a channel for non-profits to use and share their videos with others.

Could assetmap.org/uganda be used as a transition tool for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs?

While the United Nations is routinely assailed for bureaucratic clunkiness, inefficiency, or even corruption, its important to recognize the absolutely vital role that its offices play in "complex man-made emergencies" (also known as "wars") and natural disaster relief.

HELP's much anticipated mobile telemedicine clinic known as "Doc-in-a-Box" was unveiled during Operations "Golden Phoenix" and "Freedom's Ring" recently.

The joint military and civilian disaster exercises were conducted in California and Arizona. The exercise simulated a massive 8.0 earthquake in the Los Angeles basin area. If such an earthquake were to hit massive numbers of people would be expected to evacuate into Arizona.

First, a round of virtual applause to NetSquared and their sponsors for launching this competition - a truly "cool experiment" as an earlier blogger rightly put it!

With apologies to Thomas Friedman, I would like to mention five proposals that recognize how "flat" the world is - meaning that distances and borders do not exist for these solutions - and which I believe clearly meet the six attributes in the Voters Guide.

The other criteria I applied are: (1) based on collaboration/partnership, and (2) a track record of doing projects like the one proposed.
