More Appetizers!

So it’s been a week since the Net Squared Conference. I’ve had some time to catch up on my myriad emails and other assorted office things that piled up in my absence, and I’d like to offer up some of my impressions.

For the past few months, I’ve been avidly squeezing all that I could from Net Squared. I’m a pretty stereotypical accidental techie here at Interplast, and I have been relying on the Net2 community to point me in the right direction for understanding Web 2.0 tools and technologies. Even though I watch the videos and keep the Net2Learn sections as handy references, I seem to get the most out of the personal connections I’ve made.

Bring your favorite blogger to Net Tuesday (on Wednesday!)

Don't forget that next week's Net Tuesday is on Wednesday, February 15th from 6-8 at the Varnish Art Gallery and Wine Bar in San Francisco.

We'll have two trailblazing bloggers there to share their stories with us, Mena Trott and Seth Mazow.

Mena is co-founder and president of Six Apart, the company behind The Movable Type publishing platform, TypePad weblogging service and LiveJournal, an online community organized around personal journals.

Seth designed, implemented and mainains Interplast's So No Child Must Wait blog. Interplast is the first international humanitarian organization to provide free reconstructive surgery in developing countries. Their work makes a direct and profound difference in the lives of 3,000 children each year who suffer physically or emotionally from a congenital deformity or injury. "So No Child Must Wait" is a weblog for Interplast volunteer surgical trips and international partner surgeons around the world.

So bring your favorite blogger, or folks from a nonprofit that you think should be blogging, to meetup with like-minded people who want to help nonprofits use the social web for social change.

Interplast is a client of Mentor Matching, the volunteer matching program that I manage at CompuMentor. They contacted me to find a volunteer to help with their blogs and to add RSS, podcasting, and live chat rooms. Their website describe themselves as: "... the first international humanitarian organization to provide free reconstructive plastic surgery in developing countries. It makes a direct and profound difference in the lives of 3,000 children each year who suffer physically or emotionally from a congenital deformity or injury."

The surgical volunteer staff upload information to the blogs from the worksite. It's a very powerful example of capturing what happens on the ground in these international volunteer projects. In addition to this blog they also have what they call "Ground Rounds", which helps to fulfill another area of their mission which is to provide medical education and tools for collaboration with surgeons in developing countries.
