The first deployment of the new Ushahidi Engine into a crisis zone took place only a couple of days ago as Ushahidi released the platform for the DRC.

"The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat!"

Years ago when it seemed that ABC News was the only television network in the U.S. to offer coverage of the Olympic Games, the network opened its sports segments with a video montage showing various athletes winning or losing in their respective competitions. As the images of the athletes played across the screen, the voice of the late Jim McKay would announce, “Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sports . . . the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” Without a doubt, these words accurately depicted what so many athletes experience on the road to the Olympic Games. But no doubt many of us have often wondered not only where these men and women came from, but what happens to them after the games are over . . . after they return home?

Darfur: Peace at any cost?

Last week, the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution to extend its peacekeeping mission in Darfur. The resolution passed overwhelmingly, with all countries in the council voting for it, except for the United States. A U.S. representative did not cast a vote, citing concerns about the wording of the resolution.

"The U.S. abstained in the vote because language added to the resolution would send the wrong message to Sudanese President Bashir and undermine efforts to bring him and others to justice," Alejandro Wolff said. "This council cannot ignore the terrible crimes that have occurred throughout the conflict in Darfur."

THANKS to all who've supported Assetmap.org/uganda

Just wanted to say a big "THANK YOU!" to everyone who has supported assetmap.org/uganda in the Netsquared Mashup Competition.

Its been especially great to see the number of Uganda focused organizations who've mobilized their communities to help develop a tool for collaboration. This is the type of community support we need to make this idea a reality.

Thanks finally to the Netsquared staff for putting on a great competition!

Assetmap.org/Uganda

Please support our project, Assetmap.org/Uganda in the Mashable competition. You can vote for us here:

http://www.netsquared.org/2008/conference/projects/assetmap-org-uganda

By mapping information about ongoing community-led philanthropic partnerships in northern Uganda, assetmap.org/uganda helps American citizens aggregate their resources to support post-conflict transformation.

We hope to facilitate collaboration among American donors and volunteers by providing a digital tool that:

Happy St. Paddy's Day! Our original submission was a little less complete than we'd planned, but we've included many more details below, including examples, a use case diagram, an expanded list of potential data sources & shared services and many compelling statistics that illustrate why we believe this tool could have incredibly broad application & appeal, so read on:

Well, I made to Johannesburg! It was a looooong flight - around 15.5 hours, not including the hour we sat on the tarmac. Has anyone travelled to Dulles lately? I forgot about the StarWars like "mobile lounges" they use to transport passengers to and from terminals, gates, and DIRECTLY TO THE PLANE. They packed everyone in it reminded me of New York subways!
