Hey Chicagoland!

Beth Kanter and I are coming to your town this week.

We'll be joining Chi-Town's social changemakers and web innovators at Net Tuesday Chicago on June 10th from 6-8 PM at ITA (Illinois Technology Association).

June 11th and 12th we'll be speaking at the Making Media Connections Conference 2008 presented by Community Media Workshop.

Last night, the Chicago NetTuesday group held its first gathering. About 30 folks met at The Point (thanks Aaron, Andrew, Joe, and Greg!) for food, networking, and an eye-opening discussion about the tech needs and challenges of non-profits. The organizations represented were diverse - advocacy orgs, media trainers, consultants, social service agencies, youth orgs, community dev corps, and more. After a short discussion (next time we’ll leave more time for this), informal networking carried on until nearly 9pm. Co-covener Michael Maranda also blogged about the meeting.

Chicago and Los Angeles Net Tuesdays This Week (NEW!)

We've got two new Net Tuesday groups starting this week, so spread the word!

The first Chicago Net Tuesday will meet on Tuesday, March 11th at 6 PM.

The first Los Angeles Net Tuesday will meet on Wednesday, March 13th at 7:30 PM.

June 13 and 14th I'll be representing NetSquared at Community Media Workshops' 2007 Making Media Connections Conference at Columbia College. On the 13th I'll be co-facilitating an all day, "Leap Into the Web," workshop with Community Media Workshops' Demetrio Maguigad, and on the 14th I'll be on the, "Good for the Web," panel along with Paul Baker of Webitects and Valerie Denney of Denney Communications.

Be a Net Tuesday Organizer in Chicago

Our Net Tuesday Chicago organizer is moving, and we need a new organizer (two would be great!) for our Chicago Meetup group.

The main things you do as an organizer is decide on the event's agenda, which can be speakers, a workshop, a discussion, a "Pimp My Nonprofit" brainstorm, or whatever form you think will faciliate networking and resource sharing among people who are interested in using the social web for social change.

Then you need to find a venue (preferably one with WiFi and refreshments) and spread the word.

Net Tuesday has blown into the windy city. The first NetSquared/Social Impact Discussion Group in Chicago will meet Tuesday, February 6th. Location TBA. The topic of the first meeting will be introductions and wikis. Elizabeth Shingleton, one of the group's facilitators, will be talking about the use of wikis in nonprofits, philanthropic institutions, and socially responsible businesses. The Civic Footprint is a website dedicated to helping residents of Cook County, Illinois determine the political and civic geographies associated with where they live. These geographies include:
â€¢ Wards
â€¢ Police Districts
â€¢ Community Areas
â€¢ Judicial Subcircuits
â€¢ County Districts
â€¢ State Representative Districts
â€¢ State Senate Districts
â€¢ Congressional Districts

A user just types in his/her address and a form returns to him/her their unique â€œFootprint.â€? The tool is designed to help residents get more engaged in their community and to better understand the different jurisdictions in which they might get involved. Healthy, sustainable communities, after all, are dependent upon active citizens who help make democratic institutions work.

The Civic Footprint civic participation tool is a project of the Center for Neighborhood Technology (www.cnt.org).
